I have fond memories of being a child in my Pepere’s work shop, listening to him and my dad speaking French Canadian, while my sister and I drank Coca Cola out of the glass bottles. (with an occasional burping contest thrown in there too)
Throughout my life, I would often think about his shop. Pepere would never rush a project, always taking his time, and made everything out of real wood, all the while using an ancient table saw that seemed to weigh a million pounds. (I think it’s still in use on occasion at my brother’s house) To this day, when I’m alone working in my shop, the smell of saw dust and the hum of my table saw often brings my mind back to Pepere.
As the years passed, I found myself caught in the crazy pace of corporate America, with a young family of my own. Looking for something to occupy my time during a cold winter season, I decided to build a table for our home. Before long, I realized that my then 10 year old son was beside me for the majority of the time, and we were both enjoying building something out of “real wood and an old saw”. (we used walnut for our first one)
As word and our reputation spread, Welcome Home Tables was born. You won’t find Coca-Cola in glass bottles in our shop, unfortunately no one speaks french, and our table saw is old, but not ancient. Other than those three points, not much is different between what we do at Welcome Home Tables and what my Pepere did in his shop. We never rush, we take our time, and we use real wood to build tables.
